September 19:: Project 2 Beginnings

Project 2:

Character Design 1; Full Body and Full Color reference sheet of character, with front (or 3/4) back and side views, a sheet (or multiple) of different expressions/poses of the character, character biography, sketches (or more if time) of different outfits for the character. Possibly sketches of the character's home. May choose to add additional sketches/art of the character if time permits. Research tutorials and information as necessary during the project.

Necessary Components:

Full body and full color reference sheet with front (or 3/4), back and side views, expression sheet, character biography. Blog postings for each class period are necessary to show progress and research.

Background information:

This is just some bits and pieces of the story from the world I am developing, and not all completely cohesive yet.
  • Citizens are ancestors of different animal species
  • Evolution removed most animal characteristics besides differences in eyes, teeth & rare cases, remaining tails/ears/wings
    • Very rarely, citizens may have more animal traits (tails, ears, wings, fur, feathers) with animal-like eyes/teeth being the common traits to possess
      King ruling (old man; unsure of presence of queen) with a single heir (unsure if should be prince or princess at this point. Also unsure if the king or the child should be the villain)
    • Islands south of the main continent are uninhabited - or 'said' to be
      places of government experimentation or secrets
  • Creatures run wild through the lands, some peacefully but others terrorizing
  • Magic is an at that is difficult to master and uncommon to learn - wisest & most advanced in magic dissappeared due to ___ (something to do with the king and/or son/islands)
    • Nowadays it's rare to find those well versed in magic
    • most don't attempt to teach themselves as spells can go wrong/backfire
    • Only the most advanced in magic are able to bring out the true 'animal' in people
      • Most don't know what they decended from
      • Certain animals are seen as "evil" and tend to portray those citizens who cannot be trusted/have alterior and/or evil motives
  • Main OC is beginner/moderate in magic - has a knack for it
    • Often makes mistakes
      • Wrong spell caused her animal characteristics to appear (wolf related??)
      • She has the ability to surpress them though (minus changes in eyes/teeth)
    • Girl of about 13-14
    • Girl's companions (fox/gryphon)
    • Both humanized w/slight animal influence as she can't make them 100% human-like
    • Gryphon was turned human as punishment; OC tried to return him to a gryphon but couldn't do it completely - left some human features

September 19:: Project 1 Finals

Version 1: More Vivid Colors

Version 2: Less Saturated Colors ('rainy mood')

World Map (will provide link to the free map texture used)

I made 2 versions of the world map since I wasn't sure if I liked it with the brighter colors or with the less saturated color scheme. The map uses a free map texture I was able to get access to from poking around on Deviantart for a bit. I'll add in the URL for the texture shortly.

Project Synopsis:

I found that digital painting provides a good challenge as it's something I'm still not super experienced with and could definitely use more practice on. On the zone painting, I tried to paint it on one layer but I ended up painting it on more than one for ease of blending (and a bit of my own sanity since I couldn't fathom making a mistake on one layer). Overall, the process was challenging and yet very fun and enlightening and I'd like to try and do it a bit more. I'm somewhat happy with where the zone 1 painting ended up, though I may revisit it later in the semester if time provides, to improve on it even further, perhaps to play with different color schemes for the scenery.

The map I want to revisit later for sure, since I still feel it needs more detail on it, like differentiation in showing mountain ranges and cliffs etc. I would also like to attempt to make my own map texture with experimentation (tea, wrinkles, ink etc) and use it instead of one I can use for free somewhere. It was merely a stand in, however, to get the idea across.

September 17:: Digital Painting WIPs

Due to a compound amount of due dates with other classes, I've decided to push back the deadline for P1 by just one class period, it now being due Thursday Sept 19. On top of this, I'm still going to start working on P2 for thursday as well.

Painting WIP

Photoshop doesn't work as well as Paint Tool SAI (the program I use on my home machine) for digital painting, since PS wasn't designed for that kind of work. I've found a couple tutorials I plan to use today to try and get some serious detail work done for my digital paintings so I don't have to 'wait' to use SAI on my home machine. I've never tried to use custom brushes on school computers though, so I'm not sure I will have access/be able to implement them. We shall see. I might have to try and make some from scratch from tutorials rather than downloading some already made, albeit free to use.

**Note to self: search for 'making the sai marker in photoshop'**

September 12:: Digital Painting WIPs

No change from the map currently; Still need to iron out those boundries & do some general shading and perhaps a texture to actually mimic a map.

WIP of the 'zone' illustration. Top is strictly through Photoshop; Bottom is working with photoshop and Paint Tool SAI.

 Had some technical issues with opening the files on my computer (technical known issues with the program, worked/working through them as I encounter them) and the fact that the palettes did not save as PNGs like I thought they did. Just little annoyances that prevented too much work. I did do some smoothing out/shading however.

September 10:: Digital Painting WIP

Unfortunately I didn't get as much done as I would have liked to this weekend. Regardless, here are the WIP PNGs of Project 1

September 5:: Finalized Sketches of World & Zone

Here are the additional sketches/notes I had for the specific environment of the main character's home, in addition to the notes/sketch from the previous posting. The bottom right has the world map, fully fleshed out (minus aesthetics, such as color, division of land, names of locations etc). Out of the sketches I did for my main character's environment, I believe the first will prove to be the most useful/visually interesting, perhaps adapting some of the second sketch into it as well. When I start painting that scenery, I'll keep my list of components in mind, as to add more detail and visual interest to the environment my character's abode will be. In the first concept sketch, I'll probably tone back the foreground a tad so it's not overtaking the whole scene.

September 3:: Sketches of Zones/Worlds

Notes Written to Self:

**The world DOES NOT need to be realistic, do not let this be a hindering factor in the design!**

What kind of world do I create?
  • Fantasy
World Influenced by:
  • Nothing (Most difficult - Nothing to reference from)
  • Reality - Real Locations?
  • Dreams/Nightmares?
Start Small or big?
  • Small 'beginning zone'
  • World Map layout ideas
World Brainstorms:

Known:
  • Want foresty starting area for main protagonist, where she lives

Unknown:
  • Structure for the rest of the world??

Themes:
  • Various, dependant on different cities (+ cities that influence them)

Protagonist's Home:

  • Faerie/Magic inspired -- larger than life trees? (unrealistically so?)
  • Exaggerated tree/foliage sizes (super large plant leaves?)
  • Interesting magic elements or enchanted items in the forest (due to main protagonist being a beginning magic user) some useful, some not so much
  • Protagonist's home hidden from view ---> enchanted?? ---> disguised as something else, more natural
  • treehouse?? ---> disguised/camoflauged

World:
  • Variation of reality/imaginary?
  • Some sort of large island mainland with smaller outlieing islands, perhaps some not even shown on a map (hidden/secret/undiscovered islands either just uncharted or the government is keeping them 'hidden' from public view on purpose)
Sketches:

I mostly worked on concepts in words rather than sketches, though I now know where I want to go with them; the world sketch is fairly accurate and I believe I will probably use a form of it in the final piece. My initial ideas would be the capital of the 'world/continent' would be where the star is, with limited access into that area for security reasons. (I think of 'continent' as different in this world, due to these being the only 'known' populated areas of the world, with perhaps some uncharted/unknown islands that either people really don't know about or that they are hidden by the government)
