October 22:: P3 WIPs

Trying to get the male anatomy correct. I think it works fairly well, although I need to make more changes to the body outline for my character in specific since he isn't meant to be super beefy or muscly. I'm also not particularly happy with his face/hair right now so I'll probably redo that as well. I envisioned him as a taller lankier guy, so I suppose the basic body outline can be altered to my needs. I'm just trying to keep things in proper proportion, although body types vary so I just need to keep in mind that not one single body 'frame' will match all the characters. I also want him to have a slightly 'beak' like nose to allude to his gryphon gene influence, and smaller angled eyes to make him look serious all the time.

I may use today to try and get the body shape right, and then work on some possible outfits on a seperate page in my sketchbook as to not alter the sketch of the body outline on the tracing paper. On the previous project, I drew the clothes outline on top of the female figure outline, but since I'm not as familiar with drawing males, and I have no idea what I want him to be wearing, I'll draw the outfit on a separate tracing paper sheet than the body shape one, to keep things organized.

Also to note: need to decide on outfit /before/ the back/side views are drawn, at least clothing wise, so everything will line up properly.

Project Synopsis:

 Overall the project was much more time consuming than I gave it credit for. I'm pleased with the outcome, since the character herself looks great and I believe is fairly balanced in terms of personality. For the next character, I need to find ways to streamline the time it takes to develop, since I end up doing most of the work on my home machine where I have access to my other art program. I need to find ways to use my time in class better, when I only have access to photoshop. Perhaps that means lining & basing the images in PS. Either way, the project was time consuming but I think the outcome makes it worth it.

October 8:: P2 WIPs

Got the reference sheet lined and based; need to add the bag still as well as pocket definition on the pants, but besides that it's just colors/shading that need to be done. Got one of the expression sheets lined and based, with the other one almost done being lined. Once I figure out how I want the colors to be on the reference sheet, fixing the proper colors on the expression sheets should be a breeze.

Tossing around the idea of 'Melinda' for the main character's name. Last name undecided.

Possible 'nicknames' if named Melinda:
Mel
Mellie
Melly
Linnie

Unsure if I'll actually use Melinda, was just an initial thought. I want something that might allude to the fact that she's a witch, without outright saying it with names associated with 'witchy' such as Glinda or Elphaba (Wizard of Oz).

Made charts for expressions + put tracing paper over the top of them to preserve the original paper. I did it this way so I can re-use the same 'sheets' for later characters, without harming it. The tracing paper serves as a barrier. There are 25 expressions that will be explored this way.

Scanned:

I started lining the sketch for the OC reference sheet. A good portion is done, but I realized after doing the lines for majority of the front view of the character that I did change the boot design a tad. For layering purposes, I wanted to do the boots before I finished lining the hair, so that is why it is incomplete. The back view is almost finished being lined. Side view was not scanned at the time of initial lining.
